If you are like me a busy woman running a few different projects a day and trying to organize everything, you might need it. I heard about Golden Milk but didn't really try to incorporate it into my habits. Until one day when I said to myself: "Wait, just a second. I am using a teaspoon of turmeric in my morning smoothie so why not to incorporate it in the evening as well?!" And ... that's how it started.

You might ask me: "Why even try that, what is so special about it?"

Well, it is like a cup full of remedies.  Golden Milk comes from Ayurveda, one of the world's oldest holistic (whole-body) healing systems and is made of three powerful ingredients: turmeric, black pepper, and coconut oil plus milk.  Each of them brings different benefits and strengthens the ones in common. A cup of golden milk before bed will:

  • improve sleep and its pattern
  • clear the skin
  • improve memory and brain function
  • purify blood
  • detoxify the liver
  • promote proper digestion
  • alleviate inflammation
  • boost up immune system

Here comes the time to learn how to make Golden Milk. I make Golden Paste first as it is easy to store and I can always add a teaspoon of that to my morning smoothie. If you want you can use this golden paste for cooking. I love to use it for my curry dishes.

  • A side note: Turmeric vs Curcumin
  • Turmeric root (Curcuma longa) is very well known in India. The root is harvested, cleaned, dried, and powdered to be used as a spice (turmeric gives curry its beautiful golden yellow color) and as a medicine. The reason for its health effects is the compound known as curcumin. A typical turmeric root contains about 2-5% curcumin.

Golden Paste

  • 1/2 cup of Organic Turmeric Powder
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 1/2 tsp of black pepper
  • 5 tbls of organic coconut oil

In a stainless steel pot cook water, turmeric and black pepper until it forms a thick paste, stirring occasionally  and cooking for about 7 to 10 minutes. Remove from heat and add organic coconut oil. Use the whisk to fully mix in the coconut oil. Finally, transfer to a glass jar with a lid and store in the refrigerator.

When you have the golden paste to make Golden Milk is pretty easy.

Golden Milk

  • 1 tsp of golden paste
  • 2 cups of almond or coconut milk
  • 1/8 tsp of vanilla (optional)
  • honey or molasses to taste (optional)
  • pinch of cinnamon (optional)

In a stainless steep pot, gently heat, but do not boil, 2 cups of milk with 1 tsp of golden paste. A whisk might be helpful to fully combine ingredients while heating.

Personally, I use only cinnamon as an addition to my golden milk. I like the taste of coconut milk which is by nature sweet and that's enough for me. But it depends on your taste buds and how you will tolerate it without adding extra sweetness.

I have noticed that my body reacts pretty well to a cup of golden milk before bed. My sleep definitely improved, I sleep through whole night and feel well rested. I also have noticed improvement with my digestive system and joints. But everybody reacts differently and sometimes you need to give more time to notice a slight or drastic change. I would encourage you to try and let me know how your body reacts to that.
